Activities or mission (Part I)

Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services believes that every parent is the perfect parent for their baby and that healthy mothers and babies are the foundation of a healthy community. They serve pregnant and parenting people that identify as Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander.

  • Hummingbird Indigenous BirthKeepers is Hummingbird's foundation program. Our doulas begin working with families as early as they call. Additionally, the BirthKeeper program is a full spectrum doula program meaning we provide support to pregnant people regardless of the outcome of their pregnancy. This means the BirthKeepers support them through the termination of a pregnancy, pregnancy loss as well as trying to conceive. Although an overwhelming majority of the Relatives Hummingbird serves are pregnant and planning to parent. The BirthKeepers provide prenatal support, childbirth and breastfeeding education, labor and delivery support and postpartum support. In 2025 BirthKeepers served 108 unduplicated families. They have attended 37 births and a total of 947 service hours in the postpartum period alone. Pilimakua Family Connections provides in home supports to families. They work with families who are at least 27 weeks pregnant through their child's 3rd birthday. Home Visitors deliver a community designed curriculum that centers infant and child development, caregiver mindfulness self compassion and cultural and language reclamation. In addition to Home Visiting services, Pilimakua hosts a monthly family connection event. Our family connection events take place in community and centers language and culture and are developmentally appropriate for young children. Additionally, Pilimakua hosts a bimonthly parent group. In 2025, Pilimakua services 124 unduplicated families through its various services. Pilimakua at its core is a Home Visiting program. In 2025 we serviced nearly 55 families and 866 home visits. The Pilimakua's Indigenous Emotional Wellness program 262 home visits were offered. The Nest is Hummingbird's guaranteed basic income pilot program. The Nest is 100% privately funded and provides no strings attached income to Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander mothers. The Nest began enrollment in August of 2023 and enrolled 15 mothers a month for 10 months with the enrollment period ending in May 2024. Due to special circumstances (pregnancy loss and stillbirth) 148 out of the original 150 mothers receive $1250 a month through their child's third birthday. This cash is "no strings attached" meaning they do not need to do anything beyond the eligibility requirements to receive their gift. Through the Nest families have access to the Nest staff (Program Manager and Abundance Auntie) who provide case management, check-ins, financial planning and social/emotional support as well as other Hummingbird programs. In 2025, the Nest transferred $2,035,000.00 directly to moms. Additionally, the Nest team launched an IndigeMoney training that provides financial literacy and wellness coaching to Indigenous families. They hosted 4 IndigeMoney trainings in 2025. Hummingbird's Storytelling and Data Sovereignty programs support our Relatives in sharing their lived experience through artwork, cultural traditions and quantitative and qualitative research and evaluation. The Storytelling program is producing a documentary on the experience of Hummingbird's Nest recipients. Additionally, they have an annual Artist Residency where Indigenous artists work with community members to develop artwork using traditional cultural practices. Hummingbird's Data Sovereignty has currently has five evaluations they are doing. The five projects are evaluating the Nest (2), evaluating Pilimakua Family Connection and the combined impact when a relative received 2 or more services at Hummingbird, developing a perinatal mood disorder screening tool for Indigenous families. Hummingbird's Culture and Community Engagement provides opportunities for families and community members to access cultural teachings and practices. Hummingbird hosts monthly Birth Bundle classes, monthly medicine making workshops, quarterly community dinners, our Family Reunion in the summer, Holiday party in the winter. Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
