Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

Meridian Canine Rescue's mission is to save animals' lives through storytelling and education. We focus primarily on individual dogs and their unique behaviors as we provide resources to the public, facilitate adoptions, and train humans/dogs.

Activities or mission (Part I)

The mission of The Animal Retreat is to save animals' lives through storytelling and education. We do so by providing shelter and care for surrendered/transferred dogs, and supporting the community and local families with behavior and training programs and resources to help them understand and manage their dogs' behavioral health. In 2024, we expanded our capacity to include programming for more at-risk species in the Treasure Valley, beginning with illegally abandoned domestic rabbits. Our community activities now include both dog and rabbit rescue work.

  • Meridian Canine Rescue (MCR) has the following programs: Adoption, Dog Care, Behavior and Training, EPIC, Rabbit Program, and Volunteer & Foster. In 2024, we prioritized our efforts as follows: 1) Moving our operations to a 15+ acre farm (March 2024) and rebranding to "The Animal Retreat (2) Expanding our community outreach services by providing specialized meals, housing, behavior plans, training, and enrichment activities in new formats; (3) increasing our professional dog training employee to full time work that is dedicated to keeping dogs in homes, ie by providing free and low cost consultations and classes to families struggling with their dogs' behavior issues and managing a free helpline for the community; (4) increasing the number of residents in our prison dog training program, EPIC, and providing them with job skill training, as well as graduating and adopting out several surrendered and transferred dogs; and (5) launching our rabbit program (our first rescue farmed animal species) by collaborating with other local, nonprofit organizations to rescue several bunnies, create care protocols, etc.We are one of the few organizations in the area that focuses on dogs with behavioral issues; our organization provides low stress living environments that have a tremendous impact on the success of our training and rehabilitation program. The Animal Retreat also educates the public, particularly adopters, to better care for their own dogs--and, now rabbits. In addition, The Animal Retreat collaborates with other organizations in the area to transfer dogs that require special training and assessment to be ready for adoption.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
