Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

Our mission is to break the cycle of fear and increase knowledge concerning breast cancer in African-American and underserved communities.

  • Cierra Sisters works to increase breast cancer knowledge, awareness, and access to care in African-American and underserved communities. We do this by hosting culturally tailored support groups, holding educational and wellness events, providing direct support to women and families navigating cancer, and partnering with medical institutions and researchers to build stronger connections between science and community. Cierra Sisters has been built and directed by the very community we serve - rooted in oral traditions and deep relationships. We know the difference we're making, and with our limited resources and capacity, our focus has been on delivering services and being responsive to community needs. As we build organizational capacity and long-term stability, we are also developing the resources, tools, and expertise to better evaluate our impact, report to external audiences, and use data to sharpen our program and advocacy focus. In 2024, Cierra Sisters served more than 3,900 people through our programs, outreach, and advocacy efforts. Highlights include: -Support Groups: 200 participants annually; providing culturally responsive spaces for healing, support, and connection. -Navigation Services: Guided newly diagnosed women through a complex healthcare system, ensuring awareness of treatment options and access to clinical trials. -Lay Advocate Volunteers: 18 women supported annually with transportation, meals, home care, and companionship. -World Mammography Day Conference: 240 attendees engaged in powerful discussions around prevention, power, policy, and wellness. -World Cancer Day Conference: 150 participants gathered to share knowledge, resources, and solidarity. -Wellness Festival / Block Walk: 1,000 doors knocked, 2,500 community members reached in a single day, 500 people engaged at the festival. -Community Empowerment Program (CEP): Expanded to three cohorts, educating 500 community members through evidence-based strategies. CEPs have been featured in the Journal of Community Health. -Research & Advocacy: In partnership with Fred Hutch Cancer Center, co-created the Anti-Racism in Oncology video series featuring Black women survivors, caregivers, and leaders. This project exposed systemic inequities in cancer care, one of the greatest reasons why Black women die from breast cancer at higher rates than their white counterparts.... Cierra Sisters is not only saving lives - we are dismantling barriers, building trust, and reshaping the way breast cancer care meets our community.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Grants received

The 10 largest by cash amount. The API serves every itemized grant.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
