Mission

THE MISSION OF THE JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM (JANM) IS TO PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF AMERICA'S ETHNIC AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY BY SHARING THE JAPANESE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE.

Activities or mission (Part I)

TO PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF AMERICA'S ETHNIC AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY BY SHARING THE JAPANESE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE.

  • EXHIBITIONS AND COLLECTIONSJANM EXTENDED THE POPULAR EXHIBITION GIANT ROBOT BIENNALE 5, WHICH CELEBRATED ASIAN AMERICAN POP CULTURE AND ART, THROUGH THE FALL. JANM'S COMMITMENT TO PRESERVING, HONORING, AND ILLUMINATING THE STORIES OF THE WORLD WAR II INCARCERATION WAS EXEMPLIFIED IN CONTESTED HISTORIES: PRESERVING AND SHARING A COMMUNITY COLLECTION, WHICH REVEALED NEW, CROWDSOURCED RESEARCH ABOUT THE IMPORTANT EATON COLLECTION OF ART AND ARTIFACTS MADE IN AMERICA'S CONCENTRATION CAMPS. TWO POP-UP EXHIBITIONS CELEBRATED JANM'S LITTLE TOKYO COMMUNITY: CELEBRATING LITTLE TOKYO AT 140 YEARS HIGHLIGHTED THE NEIGHBORHOOD'S HISTORY THROUGH ITEMS FROM JANM'S COLLECTION, WHILE MARIO GERSHOM REYES: OBRAS DE LUZ (WORKS OF LIGHT) HONORED THE COMMUNITY-BASED WORK OF THE BELOVED RAFU SHIMPO PHOTOGRAPHER. JANM'S NATIONALLY TOURING EXHIBITION PICTURES OF BELONGING, WHICH INVITES VIEWERS TO REDISCOVER THE WORK OF THREE TRAILBLAZING WOMEN - MIKI HAYAKAWA, HISAKO HIBI, AND MINE OKUBO - CONTINUED TO THE SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN ART MUSEUM, WHERE IT WAS MET WITH CRITICAL ACCLAIM AND SOME 800,000 VISITORS. THE JANM-ORGANIZED EXHIBITION JAPANESE AMERICAN HISTORY AND ART FROM JANM'S COLLECTION TRAVELED TO THE FURUKAWA ART MUSEUM AND THE NAGOYA CITY CIVIC RECEPTION HOUSE IN JAPAN.JANM'S PERMANENT COLLECTION OF SOME 160,000 OBJECTS CONTINUED TO GROW WITH THE ACQUISITION OF SEVENTY-NINE COLLECTIONS IN FY2025, THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF OUR DONORS. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED NA OMI SHINTANI'S PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE, 2014, A POWERFUL SCULPTURE OF A FLAG MADE FROM BARBED WIRE AND WOOD ORIGINALLY FROM BARRACKS AT TULE LAKE; THE "ENEMY ALIEN JACKET" ISSUED TO ITARU INA UPON HIS ARRIVAL AT THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE INTERNMENT CAMP AT FT. LINCOLN IN BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA; AND A 1970S NATIONAL RICE-O-MAT MODEL SR10E RICE COOKER THAT REPRESENTS THE ARRIVAL OF JAPANESE PRODUCTS AND THE EVOLUTION OF JAPANESE AMERICAN CULTURE IN THE POSTWAR PERIOD. THESE WORKS WILL BE FEATURED IN JANM'S NEW CORE EXHIBITION. OTHER WORKS TO BE FEATURED IN THE CORE EXHIBITION LIKE THE 1938 MONTEREY JACL FLAG AND THE HEART MOUNTAIN BARRACK, UNDERWENT MAJOR CONSERVATION EFFORTS THIS YEAR.THE IREICHO NATIONAL TOUR LAUNCHED AT THE US NAVY MEMORIAL VISITOR CENTER AND THE SMITHSONIAN ON THE DAY OF REMEMBRANCE, AND BROUGHT THE MOVING MONUMENT THAT IS THE BOOK OF NAMES TO MANZANAR, AMACHE, JEROME-ROHWER, AND THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA IN FY2025.

    Expenses $5,122,193 · Revenue $205,117

  • EDUCATIONAFTER CONCLUDING THE FIRST HALF OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR WITH SCHOOL CHILDREN VISITING JANM IN-PERSON BEFORE IT CLOSED FOR RENOVATION, JANM'S EDUCATION TEAM TURNED TO VIRTUAL VISITS AND PILOTED A NEW, IN-SCHOOL PROGRAM THAT BROUGHT LESSONS OF JAPANESE AMERICAN HISTORY TO MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CLASSROOMS AND ASSEMBLIES, OFTEN REACHING ENTIRE GRADES, IN SOME CASES, THE ENTIRE SCHOOL IN ONE DAY. THE MUSEUM REACHED 8,912 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS IN 28 STATES IN FY2025. IN MAY 2025, THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES FUNDING FOR JANM'S ANNUAL LANDMARKS OF AMERICAN HISTORY TEACHER WORKSHOPS WAS TERMINATED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY. BUT DISAPPOINTMENT SOON CHANGED TO ELATION AS HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY STEPPED UP WITH DONATIONS TO BRING TEACHERS FROM ACROSS THE US TO JANM. THE SIXTY-FOUR TEACHERS ATTENDING THE WORKSHOPS IN FY2025 MET CAMP SURVIVORS AND TOURED LITTLE TOKYO AND MANZANAR, BRINGING BACK EXPERIENCES THAT WILL COLLECTIVELY REACH THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS ACROSS THE COUNTY EVERY YEAR.

    Expenses $1,887,452

The first 25 listed. Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all. Showing the 10 most recent; the API carries the rest.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Grants received

The 10 largest by cash amount. The API serves every itemized grant.

Taxable family

From Schedule R Parts I, III and IV: entities that legally are the filer, and taxable partnerships, corporations and trusts it is related to. These record ownership and control, not shared board members or money.

California fundraising campaigns

Campaigns run by paid fundraisers, commercial coventurers and thrift stores naming this organization, as California published them. Both figures are as filed, and what the first one counts depends on the campaign type — a coventurer or a thrift store files its own sales rather than money collected for the charity. The 990 reports this only as a yearly total, never per campaign.

    2019 CF Vehicle Donation Program

Amounts are as filed and do not add up: a commercial coventurer reports one promotion's whole gross once for each charity that shared in it. A campaign may also name more than one registered charity, in which case it appears on each.

Other IRS files

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
