Primary exempt purpose

The August Foundation for Alaska Racing Dogs primary exempt purpose is helping provide veterinary care and located homes for sled dogs when their racing or touring days are over and helping with the overflow of puppies from Alaska Native Villages to become socialized with mushing kennels as fosters to prepare the puppies for adoption.

  • Helping to Rehome racing touring or recreational mushing sled dog new homes when their formal running days are done. We increase the number of dogs we help each year. We also facilitate transportation for mushers who send their dogs outside of Alaska and also advertise for mushers who choose to adopt direct from their kennels rather than have us place in foster homes. Each dog we place through our fostering receives a basic health exam spay or neutering and applicable vaccinations.

    Expenses $40,000 · Grants $50,000

  • Onsite Vet Clinic: We purchased a small building and had a donor pay to finish the interior plus other grants for equipment to host a visiting veterinarian to perform spay and neuter procedures for the previous years pups that were adopted and for incoming retiring sled dogs that were not already altered.

    Expenses $37,000 · Grants $37,000

  • This past year we took in 14 litters of puppies from Alaska Native Villages that were flown in to Anchorage. This amounted to more than 100 puppies and some with moms still nursing to be spayed and rehomed or returned back to their owners in the villages. Each litter of puppies was fostered here on site or at mushing tour kennels where the puppies would be handled by tourists and be cared for daily until old enough to be adopted. This provides wonderful socialization and growth opportunities for the puppies who end up being confident happy and more easy to adapt to their new adoptive families meaning we have less returns after adoption.

    Expenses $20,000 · Grants $30,000

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Auto-Revocation List

  • Exemption revoked 15 May 2016, reinstated 15 May 2016.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
