Mission and programs · 2025

Primary exempt purpose

The foundational mission of Breakloose is to facilitate the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord among inmates, and to provide ongoing discipleship throughout their spiritual journey. We hold firm to the belief that our mandate, as inspired by Matthew 25, is effectively fulfilled through collaboration with local churches. This partnership is crucial both for supporting inmates during their incarceration and as they reintegrate into society post-release. The ultimate objective of our ministry is to significantly reduce the recidivism rate, ideally aiming for a scenario where none of the one in three individuals who currently return to prison do so. Our strategy involves a comprehensive transformation through the love of Jesus Christ, facilitated not only through spiritual guidance but also through practical, actionable programs. The goal is that each inmate we engage with emerges from incarceration fully equipped with the tools necessary for success in society.

  • In 2023, Breakloose was honored with the prestigious "Volunteers of the Year" award. This accolade was bestowed upon us in recognition of our pioneering efforts and dedication through the sports and kids camp programs. Our innovative approach to engaging inmates and the community through these initiatives has not only enriched the lives of participants but has also set a benchmark for creative volunteerism within the correctional system. The sports programs, designed to foster teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness, alongside the kids camps, which offer a safe, engaging environment for both learning and recreation, have been instrumental in promoting positive change and development. This recognition from Madison Correctional Facility underscores the impact of our volunteer driven efforts, highlighting our commitment to transformative programming that reaches beyond traditional rehabilitation methods.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
