Mission

AFROURBANISM IS A MOVEMENT ACTIVATING INTERDIMENSIONAL BLACK GENIUS TOWARD THE IDEATION AND MANIFESTATION OF THRIVING BLACK FUTURES. THE WORK OF IAU IS BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT INSIDE EVERYONE IS THE CAPACITY TO THRIVE. IF ONE CAN IDENTIFY HOW THRIVING MANIFESTS WITHIN PEOPLE, IT CAN BE ACTIVATED IN OTHERS ACROSS COMMUNITIES, SPANNING THE DIASPORA. IT IS THE BELIEF THAT, IF AGENCY, ABUNDANCE, AND AUDACITY ARE ACTIVATED, THEN ONE IS INDEED THRIVING.

Activities or mission (Part I)

THE INSTITUTE FOR AFROURBANISM ("IAU") IS A THINK TANK AND ACTION LAB WORKING AT THE INTERSECTION OF BLACK THRIVING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.

  • IAU WILL ENGAGE SALARIED CITIZEN RESEARCHERS TO FACILITATE GENERATIVE DIALOGUES WITH MEMBERS OF THEIR COMMUNITIES. CITIZEN RESEARCHERS WILL THEN, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH IAU, DETROIT MERCY, AND PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS, CO-CREATE AN "INDEX" BY WHICH THE ABILITY TO ASSESS THE EXTENT TO WHICH CURRENT DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS CONTRIBUTE TO, OR DETRACT FROM, THE WELL BEING OF BLACK RESIDENTS CAN BE STARTED. ONCE A THRESHOLD (SET OF CRITERIA OUTLINED IN A REPORT) FOR THRIVING HAS BEEN DETERMINED, THE PRACTITIONERS WILL THEN HAVE DATA THAT CAN INFORM THE POLICIES AND PRACTICES NECESSARY TO MANIFEST THRIVING BLACK COMMUNITIES THAT ARE DESERVED.

    Expenses $143,075 · Revenue $1,400

  • AS IAU SEEKS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE UNIVERSAL CRITERIA FOR BLACK THRIVING, THE EXPEDITION SERVES PREDOMINANTLY AS A RESEARCH EFFORT. THE PARIS EDITION IS ORGANIZED AROUND THE CEREMONIAL INDUCTION OF JOSEPHINE BAKER INTO THE ILLUSTRIOUS PANTHEON, THE MONUMENT WHICH HOUSES THE REMAINS OF FRANCE'S MOST RENOWNED WAR HEROES, AUTHORS, AND LUMINARIES OF VARIOUS DISTINCTIONS.

    Expenses $69,015

  • YOUTH PROGRAM, INCLUDING SUPPLIES, MEALS, PASS-THROUGH ENTITY TRANSACTIONS, AND CONTRACTOR ACTIVITY

    Expenses $178,464 · Grants $91,000 · Revenue $26,706

  • OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL MONTHS, IAU WILL ENGAGE ORGANIZATIONS IN A TRANSFORMATIVE PROCESS EXPLORING THE APPLICATION OF "REPAIRATIONS" WITHIN EACH ORGANIZATION AND WITH THE COMMUNITIES IT SERVES. IN ORDER TO USHER IN A PARADIGM SHIFT THAT IS WORTHY OF 2021'S WORLDWIDE RACIAL RECKONING, A NEW FRAMEWORK IS REQUIRED. IAU'S APPROACH IS ROOTED IN A MODEL OF RESTORATION AND REPAIR, ONE THAT SEEKS TO RESTORE BALANCE IN RELATIONSHIPS WITH EACH OTHER AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

    Expenses $11,155 · Revenue $56,609

  • ARTIST IN RESIDENCY

    Expenses $45,701

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
