Mission

The Carnegie Library of Homesteads mission is to provide programs and facilities that enhance learning, wellness, and quality of life within and outside of the Steel Valley. Today, we serve over 17,000 residents of Munhall, Homestead, West Homestead, and Whitaker;

  • The Library holds over 37,500 volumes and resources in circulation, with 3,000,000 county-wide items in collection (books, audiobooks, and DVDs). In 2024, the Library had nearly 7,300 cardholders (35% of our residents) and 230,000 visits (750 per day). Our 30 computers provided nearly 34,000 online sessions to the general public, including disadvantaged individuals who cannot afford home computers and online services. Last year, the library held 1,300 learning programs attended by 20,000 people of all ages. The Library offers something for community families every day: storytime and physical activities for young children; science and art classes for homeschooled kids and their parents; literacy programs reaching 30 local preschools and daycare centers; homework help for teens with access to laptops and advanced software; STEAM workshopsincluding robotics in the Makerspace; book clubs for all ages; knitting and crafting for adults; and cultural programs like French and Russian lessons and pysanky egg decorating. The Library hosts one of the regions largest restorative justice programs for teens, offering counselor-led guidance in effective conflict resolution to reduce violence in the community.

  • The Music Hall, an intimate 126-year-old venue, seats 1,030 guests and has changed very little since its original construction, though it is currently undergoing a restoration campaign. Recent updates include a refurbished lobby with an elevator serving all three levels, as well as new seating and carpeting throughout the theater. In 2024, more than 52,000 patrons from Western Pennsylvania and across the country attended over 80 nationally known performances. Affordably priced tickets make it easy to enjoy popular artists such as Mateo Bocelli, Nikki Glaser, Little River Band, Boz Scaggs, Jeff Goldblum, and more. Beyond performances, the Music Hall serves as a community house for local nonprofits, hosting civic engagement programs and events such as graduations, naturalization ceremonies, school band concerts, church plays, and local dance recitals. The venue is also a leading economic driver for nearby restaurants, retailers, and hotelsbringing over $2 million in revenue to the Waterfront and Eighth Avenue districts for every 100 shows held. Revenue from ticket sales and space rentals helps support the facility and the programs that serve our community.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
