Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON CONSUMER ISSUES, INCLUDING THOSE RELATED TO GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS, ESPECIALLY THOSE RELATED TO PRODUCT CHOICES; TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT ORGANIZATIONS THAT WORK ON ISSUES RELATED TO PUBLIC POLICIES, ESPECIALLY THOSE WORKING TO INCREASE (CONTINUED) GOVERNMENT REGULATION AND ELIMINATE CONSUMER CHOICE; TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT ORGANIZATIONS, THEIR FUNDING SOURCES AND THEIR PROGRAM ACTIVITIES.

Activities or mission (Part I)

RESEARCH AND EDUCATION ON ISSUES RELATED TO CONSUMER CHOICES AND THE ACTIVIST COMMUNITY ATTACKING THOSE CHOICES; PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION TO POLICYMAKERS, THE MEDIA AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

  • MAINTAINED HUMANEWATCH.ORG, A WATCHDOG PROJECT TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT VARIOUS ANIMAL LIBERATION ACTIVISTS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND ISSUES. THIS INCLUDES HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES, PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS AND OTHER GROUPS. RESEARCHED VOLUMES OF DOCUMENTS, INCLUDING FEDERAL TAX FORMS, CORRESPONDENCE, NEWS ARTICLES, LEGAL AND GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS, PUBLICATIONS, AND OTHER RECORDS, WHICH THE ORGANIZATION PUBLISHES ON A DYNAMIC WEBSITE THAT GETS MORE THAN 500,000 VISITORS A YEAR. PRODUCED AND PLACED NATIONWIDE ADVERTISING TO EDUCATE DONORS AND THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE TRACK RECORD AND GOALS OF GROUPS LIKE HSUS AND PETA.

    Expenses $391,615 · Grants $40,000

  • CONTINUED A NATIONAL PUBLIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGN ABOUT CONTAMINANTS IN TAP WATER INCLUDING FECAL BACTERIA AND HEAVY METALS. CORE LAUNCHED AN INTERACTIVE ONLINE DATABASE AT ISTAPWATERSAFE.COM THAT ALLOWS PEOPLE TO LOOK INTO THEIR LOCAL WATER SUPPLIER. THE WEBSITE USES TESTING DATA PROVIDED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR COMMUNITY WATER SYSTEMS. THIS DATA SHOWS WHETHER A WATER SYSTEM HAS DETECTED POTENTIALLY HARMFUL LEVELS OF CONTAMINANTS.

    Expenses $67,522

  • CONTINUED A CAMPAIGN TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON FAKE MEAT. INCLUDING UPDATES TO CLEAN FOOD FACTS, A WEBSITE THAT LISTS THE INGREDIENTS OF DOZENS OF MEAT ANALOGUE FOOD PRODUCTS. CLEAN FOOD FACTS EDUCATES CONSUMERS ABOUT WHAT IS ACTUALLY IN THESE PRODUCTS, SINCE FAKE MEAT IS OFTEN PROMOTED AS HEALTHIER DESPITE BEING ULTRA-PROCESSED. PROMOTED THE WEBSITE WITH ONLINE EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS AND OPINION EDITORIALS, RESULTING IN COVERAGE IN MAJOR MEDIA PUBLICATIONS.

    Expenses $16,548

  • CORE ALSO MAINTAINED OTHER PROGRAMS THAT EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ON ISSUES OF NATIONAL SECURITY, STATE SPENDING ON DEI IN SCHOOLS, VETERANS CHARITIES, ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS, AND JUNK SCIENCE.

    Expenses $29,622

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Not present in the most recent drop.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
