Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

CultureWorks is committed to its mission: strengthening artists and arts and culture organizations to increase their impact in our region.

  • The CultureWorks Grants Program was developed with the intent to support smaller 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, with limited resources and operating budgets less than $750,000, as well as funding for individual practicing artists. With few sources of support available in the Richmond and Tri-Cities Regions focused entirely on helping small to mid-size arts and culture organizations, the Grants Program is able to fulfill this need and fund quality programs, events and initiatives for our community. Grant funding is available to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and individual artists in the Richmond and Tri-Cities Regions and focuses on two funding priorities - Cultural Equity and Building Capabilities.

    Expenses $190,603 · Grants $124,600

  • The city of Richmond and the counties of Hanover and Henrico provide financial support annually. These funds were allocated for general operating support to the member organizations of the arts and culture funding consortium. This consortium is the only designated entity able to administer the combined public funding of the community arts and cultural organizations.

    Expenses $461,299 · Grants $441,375

  • artoberVA is a month-long celebration of arts and culture across the Richmond and Tri-Cities region. It provides a common marketing platform that enables the promotion of hundreds, even thousands, of arts and culture events presented by the full spectrum of non-profit arts and culture organizations and artists in our region. The goal of the event is to engage the public in these arts and culture events during artoberVA, and throughout the year which leads to greater economic, educational and social impacts in our region.

    Expenses $85,252

  • Other program services include quarterly networking events, Tri-Cities Arts & Culture Action Plan, AEP6 Economic Impact Study, and other collaborative, educational or advocacy programs supporting arts and culture nonprofit organizations and artists.

    Expenses $270,385

As filed on the 2024 return. The filer continues this part on Schedule O, which is not shown here.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
