Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

flok Health (the Organization), formerly National PKU News, is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization supporting individuals and families affected by inherited disorders of protein metabolism, including Phenylketonuria (PKU), Classical Homocystinuria (HCU), Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), Tyrosinemia, Organic Acidemias, and Urea Cycle Disorders (UCDs). These rare genetic conditions disrupt the bodys ability to process protein, which can lead to serious neurological and physical harmincluding developmental delays, seizures, coma, and deathif not carefully managed through lifelong treatment.

Activities or mission (Part I)

flok Health supports people with inherited metabolic disorders through research, education, and community. Its programs include the flok app for daily management, family camps and retreats, and patient-led research initiatives.

  • Daily Care: To improve everyday life with a low-protein disorder, flok Health develops and maintains tools and resources that support dietary management and health tracking: flok App: Publicly released in November 2024, the flok mobile app integrates dietary tracking, symptom and activity journaling, and biometric data collection for people managing flok conditions. It is designed to support individuals and their care teams in making informed decisions about health and nutrition. Cook for Love: A culinary education platform offering free, low-protein recipes and meal planning guidance. The website continues to serve over 13,000 registered users and remains a critical daily care resource. Pocket Books: The Organization publishes and distributes printed guides listing protein and amino acid values for common foods, tailored to individuals with specific metabolic conditions. These materials are widely used by families and clinicians to support medical nutrition therapy.

    Expenses $737,748

  • Community: flok Health fosters connection and belonging through direct community engagement, including the planning and hosting of camps and retreats for children, adults, and families affected by low-protein metabolic conditions. These events offer safe, supportive environments to build relationships, share lived experiences, and practice key skills related to dietary care. Community programs are designed to empower individuals and strengthen a network of mutual support that spans generations and geographies.

    Expenses $419,880

  • Research: While flok Health did not conduct original research in 2024, the organization focused significant effort on preparing the infrastructure, partnerships, and regulatory pathways to enable future community-led studies. This includes developing features within the flok app to capture real-world data, establishing ethical review processes, and convening stakeholders to shape a research agenda grounded in patient priorities. The ultimate goal is to fuel a natural history of these rare conditions and accelerate the development of better treatments and improved standards of care.

    Expenses $48,754

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
