Activities or mission (Part I)

TO PUT JUDEO-CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES INTO PRACTICE THROUGH PROGRAMS THAT BUILD HEALTHY SPIRIT MIND & BODY FOR ALL

  • Healthy Living: The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is committed to improving the quality of life in our communities by helping everyone - kids, teens, families, and seniors improve their health and foster connections through fitness, sports, shared interests, and overall well-being. Y health and wellness programs, such as group exercise, strength training, personal training, senior programming, boxing for Parkinson's, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, clinical and rehabilitative fitness, homeschool fitness, the Traveling Y, and adult and youth sports, are all important as our nation struggles with chronic disease and obesity, mental wellness, as families wrestle with work/life balance, and as individuals search for personal fulfillment. Our membership and programs are accessible, affordable and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels. In 2022, we served 149,264 individuals and provided $4,753,650 in financial assistance to people who otherwise may not have been able to participate due to financial barriers. Every dollar received through Y fundraising and program or membership revenue is reinvested in the community through Y programs and services. The investment in 2021 to enhance the Virtual Y with a studio to offer more professional support for online fitness and enrichment classes has continued to be of support to the Y's membership base in 2022 serving more than 6,000 unique individuals. The Virtual Y offers access at an affordable $4.99 per month and has proven to be valuable to the traditional facility membership-meeting people where they are.

    Expenses $24,535,858 · Revenue $24,868,061

  • Youth Development: The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Y programs, such as state-licensed summer camp, ACA-accredited overnight camp, state-licensed before and after school care, swim lessons, adaptive swim lessons, lifeguard training, golf at First Tee - Hampton Roads, Parent's Time Out, and preschool child care all offer a range of experiences that provide academic support and enrichment, physical activity, healthy habits, social connectivity, family engagement, leadership skills, strong values, water safety, and lots of fun! In 2022, YMCA programs proved to be a critical need for the families as enrollment soared past historical figures to support 27,262 unique individuals in the above-mentioned programs. Y programs require both extensive training and a high volume of individuals to deliver services. Increased wages continued to apply pressure due to labor market conditions. Even with the market conditions, the Y continues to provide $1,924,656 in income-based financial assistance to 4,239 participant families engaging in youth-focused programs.

    Expenses $16,472,454 · Grants $12,000 · Revenue $15,741,600

  • Social Responsibility: The YMCA of South Hampton Roads believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. We have been listening and responding to our community's most critical needs for more than 165 years in Hampton Roads. Our signature program, Togetherhood, is a member-led volunteer initiative. It activates Y members to plan and lead service projects that respond to local needs and produce social change. Three YMCA locations in Hampton Roads have been identified as Health Equity Campuses offering a regular food pantry, mental health and financial resources. In 2022, funding was secured to expand the program to an additional three locations expected to launch in 2023. The Y opens its facilities for others to use for conferences, training, aquatics and other events. In 2022, YMCA 824 volunteers clocked in 19,574 hours to serve in areas such as youth sports coaches, annual giving leads, membership, and board service. Late 2021, a new membership was established called the Impact Network, available for community members to convene and problem solve to improve mental, financial, social and health equity in the local community. The work deepened in 2022 as the Network focused on developing teen mental health support resources. In 2022, the YMCA received new partner support for its Safety Around Water program designed to prevent drowning. The support was able to offer equitable access and transportation support for nearly 3,000 children. Launched in 2022 as a response to the community need, the Y initiated its sponsor-a-teen membership program granting free YMCA access to teens 13-18 June 1-August 31, 2022. With an original goal of serving 1,000 new teens, more than 4,400 joined the Y with more than 300 unique teen activities planned to engage them during the summer. This program was 100% donor funded and is expected to continue in the future.

    Expenses $293,941 · Grants $28,376 · Revenue $470,501

  • OTHER: The primary program offerings not included in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility mainly include adult program revenue and golf tournament fees.

    Expenses $34,926 · Revenue $83,400

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.

The filer's explanations (Part III)

Schedule J, Part I, Line 5a Compensation contingent on revenues of the organization
IN ADDITION TO BASE PAY, THE YMCA OF SOUTH HAMPTON ROADS HAS AN INCENTIVE VARIABLE PAY MATRIX BASED ON SPECIFIC BENCHMARKED PERFORMANCE GOALS. THE BENCHMARKS ARE BASED ON BUDGETED GOALS FOR SEVERAL CRITERIA, INCLUDING MEMBERSHIP REVENUE, NET EARNINGS, FUNDRAISING GOALS, AND ON SEVERAL OTHER GOALS INCLUDED IN THE STRATEGIC AND OPERATIONAL PLANS. ANNUALLY, THE COMPENSATION COMMITTEE REVIEWS AND APPROVES ACTUAL PERFORMANCE VERSUS THE BENCHMARKS AND ESTABLISHES THE AMOUNTS OF INCENTIVE PAY FOR EACH GOAL WITHIN THE PRE-ESTABLISHED SET OF ACHIEVEMENT RANGES.
Schedule J, Part I, Line 6a Compensation contingent on net earnings of the organization
SEE ANSWER TO QUESTION 5A.

Part I's answers as filed. A line not listed was left unanswered; on lines 1a and 3 that means the box was not checked.
