Mission

THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION OF KENTUCKY (ACLU) IS FREEDOM'S WATCHDOG, WORKING DAILY IN COURTS, LEGISLATURES AND COMMUNITIES TO DEFEND THE INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES GUARANTEED TO ALL PEOPLE BY THE CONSTITUTIONS OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY.

  • LITIGATING ON BEHALF OF TRANSGENDER KENTUCKIANS:OUR LEGAL TEAM CONTINUED LITIGATING WITH PARENTS OF TRANSGENDER YOUTH ACROSS KENTUCKY TO CHALLENGE THE HEALTHCARE PORTIONS OF A LAW THAT INSERTS LAWMAKERS BETWEEN DOCTORS AND PATIENTS. THIS LAW PROHIBITS ESSENTIAL MEDICAL CARE BY TARGETING HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AND THREATENING THEM WITH LOSS OF LICENSURE IF THEY PROVIDE THAT CARE TO MINORS. THE LAW VIOLATES THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS OF PARENTS TO DIRECT THE UPBRINGING OF THEIR CHILDREN.DURING FY25, THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES DECIDED TO REVIEW THE SIXTH CIRCUIT'S DECISION PREVENTING TRANSGENDER YOUTH FROM RECEIVING NECESSARY MEDICAL CARE IN TENNESSEE AND KENTUCKY. WHILE THE COURT DECIDED NOT TO REVIEW THE KENTUCKY LAW SPECIFICALLY, THE DOJ'S FAILED CHALLENGE TO THE SIXTH CIRCUIT'S DECISION (ANNOUNCED DURING FY26) MEANS OUR CASE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD. DESPITE THE RULING ON GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE, WE WILL NEVER STOP FIGHTING FOR TRANSGENDER KENTUCKIANS' RIGHT TO EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW AND FREEDOM TO ACCESS THE THINGS THEY NEED TO LIVE FULL AND AUTHENTIC LIVES.

    Expenses $187,916

  • CONTINUED FALLOUT FROM THE MOVEMENT FOR JUSTICE FOR BREONNA TAYLOR:LITIGATION RELATED TO THE 2020 PROTESTS FOR JUSTICE FOR BREONNA TAYLOR IS STILL ON THE DOCKET. ACLU-KY REPRESENTS PROTESTORS WHOSE FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS WERE VIOLATED WHILE THEY PEACEFULLY PROTESTED. THE LOUISVILLE METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT (LMPD) USED TEAR GAS, RUBBER BULLETS, AND OTHER CROWD CONTROL WEAPONRY DURING THE PROTESTS, CAUSING INJURIES. OUR LAWSUIT SEEKS LMPD POLICY CHANGE, AS WELL AS DAMAGES FOR OUR CLIENTS.ADJACENT TO THIS LITIGATION, THE LEGAL TEAM PARTNERED WITH 14 OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO FILE A BRIEF IN SUPPORT OF THE CONSENT DECREE AGREEMENT THE CITY OF LOUISVILLE AND LMPD REACHED WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE. AFTER A YEARS-LONG INVESTIGATION, THE DOJ FOUND LMPD HAS A PATTERN/PRACTICE OF VIOLATING THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF BLACK AND BROWN LOUISVILLIANS. A NEW FEDERAL ADMINISTRATION HAS LEFT THE CONSENT DECREE IN LIMBO. WE CONTINUE OUR WORK IN FY26 TO DEMAND CITY LEADERS AND LMPD MOVE FORWARD WITH THE CONSENT DECREE WITHOUT A FEDERAL COURT MONITOR.

    Expenses $461,999

  • ADDRESSING JAIL DEATHS/EXPANDING AMNESTY COURT DOCKETS:UNFORTUNATELY, THE JAIL DEATHS CRISIS AT LOUISVILLE METRO DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS CONTINUED WITH MORE LIVES LOST IN THE FACILITY DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR. ACLU-KY CONTINUES LEADING A COMMUNITY COALITION CALLED THE COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS TO END DEATHS AT LMDC. QUARTERLY MEETINGS WITH DIRECTOR COLLINS AND MONITORING OF THE NEW HEALTHCARE CONTRACT ARE KEY ACTIVITIES, AND OUR EFFORTS TO SLOW THE FLOW OF PEOPLE INTO THE TROUBLED, UNDERSTAFFED FACILITY ARE ONGOING. ALONG WITH ALLIED ORGANIZATIONS AND PARTNERS FROM THE JUSTICE SYSTEM, WE HOSTED ANOTHER AMNESTY COURT DOCKET ACROSS THREE DAYS IN LOUISVILLE, JEFFERSON COUNTY TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF FOLKS WITH BENCH WARRANTS HANGING OVER THEIR HEADS.

    Expenses $375,873 · Grants $67,382 · Revenue $3,565

  • WORKING TO OPERATIONALIZE ORGANIZATION'S STRATEGIC PLAN BY FOCUSING ON KENTUCKIAN'S INALIENABLE RIGHTS.

    Expenses $153,038 · Grants $5,640

The first 25 listed. Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all. Showing the 10 most recent; the API carries the rest.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
