Mission

Black Men Teach (BMT) recruits, prepares, places, and retains Black male teachers in elementary schools by building a robust pathway to the teaching profession.

  • College Fellows: Scholarships, Student Teaching Stipends and Internships, Leadership Coaching and Non-traditional/Alternative Certification. In an effort to offset the financial burden of their education, Black Men Teach offers up to $20,000 scholarships to its participants. These scholarships are provided to men who are active participants in our program and are paid over four years. To qualify, students provide BMT with transcripts, confirming their class status, current course schedules, academic credits and fee statements. BMT offers these as "last dollar" scholarships. In the fiscal year 2025, twenty-five scholarships received scholarships. Student teaching required to earn a degree and become a licensed teacher, is a significant financial burden for students. Because this activity is full time, for a period of 12 to 16 weeks, it precludes the student from earning outside income from a full or part time job. Therefore, many students leave the teaching track at this late stage because of this burden. BMT assists its teaching candidates by providing a stipend or paying for their internship during this part of their education. In fiscal year 2025, five student teachers and interns benefited from this program as did approximately 350 elementary school students who were exposed to a Black male teacher. Leadership coaching is available to all college students who are in the BMT program. This training assists them with leading in a classroom. The non-traditional/alternative licensure program assists a college student stay in school to study elementary education while providing them with an in-class job while going to school.

    Expenses $932,907 · Grants $359,460

  • Collective Impact: Black Men Teach understands that it takes the full community to fulfill our mission. Black Men Teach leads a cohort of other nonprofits, universities, and state government entities to come together and each do its part to recruit, train, support, and retain our educators.

    Expenses $477,861

  • Teachers: Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP), Instructional Coaching and Alternative Certification. Most teachers graduate school with student loan debt. and Black men have significantly more debt than their white counterparts. This burden often leads men to leave the profession. SLRP pays off the principal amount of student debt held by practicing teachers over a five-year period. Black Men Teach also supported two teachers with down payment assistance toward their first home close to the school they work. For fiscal year 2025, twenty-five men were directly supported by this program and approximately 400 elementary school students benefited from them remaining in the classroom. An instructional coach visits each teacher's classroom to coach their teaching methods to improve student learning and participation.

    Expenses $408,921 · Grants $190,511

  • Events: Black Men Teach supports our mission by holding multiple events each year to provide recruitment, training and celebration of our program participants including the Brick by Brick Event, the BMT Conference, the BMT Educators Event, and Retreats and Workshops

    Expenses $49,906

  • High School: Black Men Teach's High School Fellows Program supports Black male students as they explore education as a career pathway. Fellows receive mentorship, early exposure to teaching, leadership development, and college readiness support. The program helps students build their identities as future educators, strengthens their academic and professional skills, and connects them to long-term opportunities within the Black Men Teach pipeline.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
