Mission

The GLBT Historical Society collects, preserves, exhibits and makes available to the public materials and knowledge to support and promote understanding of LGBTQ history, culture and arts in all their diversity.

  • Archives - The GLBT Historical Society Archives had an extremely successful 2024. We received several important grants, digitized new material, and enriched our holdings with newly accessioned collections. We also continued implementation of our digital asset management system, which provides robust digital infrastructure and helps us better preserve and share digitized and born-digital content. We welcomed over 380 onsite researchers working on many different kinds of projects. We continued to expand our online offerings, making 11 new digital archival collections available. In addition, the archives accessioned 66 new collections in 2024.

    Expenses $601,891 · Revenue $118,768

  • Public Exhibitions - The GLBT Historical Society Museum in San Francisco remains a key setting for the GLBT Historical Society to share our past with LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ publics and to advocate for the preservation of queer history and culture. In 2024, we maintained our COVID-19 safety precautions, continuing to require masks for all guests and staff in the space but no longer requiring proof of vaccination. We presented 3 new exhibitions in the museum space and continued re-building our in-person public programs calendar, hosting 15 in-person public programs and exhibition 4 opening receptions, as well as 1 online workshop. We welcomed nearly 60 schools and community organizations for group tours and nearly 8,000 individual guests visiting the museum. We continue to be specifically guided by the areas of strategic focus as outlined in the society's five-year strategic plan: Women, bisexual people, transgender people, people with disabilities, Black people, Native/Indigenous people, Asian Americans, Latinx people.

    Expenses $418,971 · Revenue $89,260

  • Public Education Program - In 2024, we continued rebuilding our capacity for in-person public programs at our museum site, hosting thirteen in-person public programs (film screenings, panel discussions, performances, and more) and one online workshop. We presented ten talks on LGBTQ history to employee resource groups, nonprofits, and governmental agencies. Our monthly electronic newsletter highlighted work to bring critical lost histories to light and had over 100,000 imprints. We maade 17 grants through our Ten:Tacles Initiative. We also continued our sponsorship of 4 LGBTQ historical projects: an archive, a book, a script, and a historic site.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
