Mission

Indiana Artisan identifies, recognizes and promotes the highest quality art and foods made by Hoosier artisans today, Its mission is to develop a brand defined by that work and to expand the brand by helping artisans expand their businesses. This is accomplished through business-related education, networking and collaborations, promotions, and a variety of opportunities to increase sales, particularly the two Marketplaces, the two retail stores, and through use of the Viewbook.

Activities or mission (Part I)

Indiana Artisan is an economic development organization that identifies, recognizes, and promotes Indiana's highest-quality art and food artisans, helping them expand their businesses and through their work, expand a brand that defines Indiana by its art and food.

  • The Indiana Artisan Carmel store is a 2500 square-foot store strategically located in the Carmel Arts and Design District, a favorite shopping destination for residents of Carmel and other parts of Greater Indianapolis, as well as out-of-town visitors. Staffing of the store is by the President of Indiana Artisan and various artisans, which results in customers having an opportunity to speak directly to artisans. Nearly all of the merchandise is on consignment from the artisans, who receive 60 percent of the sales price while the store receives 40 percent. This gives the artisans a retail outlet they don't have to manage, and is an effective teaching tool for how they can expand their businesses. Expenses include President's time and promotional costs which are fully allocated to Carmel.

    Expenses $162,506 · Revenue $196,983

  • The Indiana Artisan Viewbook is a 52-page, four-color publication illustrating the work of Indiana's highest-quality artisans and listing contact information for each. In 2024, 22,000 copies were printed, 12,000 of which were bundled with TravelIN Magazine. The remaining copies were distributed through individual Indiana Artisans and both Indiana Artisan stores.

    Expenses $1,433 · Revenue $1,295

  • The Indiana Artisan Marketplace is an annual tradeshow of the Artisans' work. It is one way this organization helps the Artisans expand their businesses - by helping them sell at wholesale to retailers and at retail to the public. The Marketplace attracted 2,019 guests in 2025. 84 artisans hosted booths.

    Expenses $62,163 · Revenue $43,358

  • The Indiana Artisan French Lick Resort Store is a 378 square-foot retail space inside the French Lick Resort Hotel. The store is staffed by part-time employees, and, though small, carries the work of 60 percent of the artisans, some of whom are not in the Carmel store, though most are. Like Carmel, it provides an opportunity for Artisans to have a retail outlet they don't have to manage. Like Carmel, Artisans receive 60% of sales.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Auto-Revocation List

  • Exemption revoked 15 May 2012, reinstated 15 May 2012.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
