Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

Awaken's mission is to increase awareness and education surrounding the issue of commercial sexual exploitation and to provide housing and restoration for its victims. Awaken acts to transform our community with the ultimate goal of eradicating commercial sexual exploitation. We aim for victims of commercial sexual exploitation to be restored to their fullest potential. We aspire to be an inspirational model for other communities.

Activities or mission (Part I)

To increase awareness and education surrounding the issue of commercial sexual exploitation

  • Awaken's Restorative Care makes up the largest portion of Awaken's services. The Awaken Center is located in an area that is dubbed a "hot spot" for prostitution. Awaken provides services to adults and youth ranging in age from 11 to over 60 years old. Services include case management, therapy referrals, mentorship, social development, psychoeducational and life skills classes, as well as an education center dedicated to the education needs of trafficked youth. Awaken provided services to 290 participants in the past fiscal year.(Continued on Schedule O)The Awaken Education Center (AEC) was established during the 2020 school year. The AEC is a specialized, holistic, education and restorative school experience for youth who have been trafficked encompassing grades 6-12. Between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, seven girls attended the Awaken Education Center (AEC). This fiscal year was also an opportunity for these girls to bring along their young children to ensure that there were no barriers to them pursuing their education. Four of the seven girls who attended the AEC, brought with them five children under the age of 3. Opportunities, options and a life of their own choosing lay ahead for our graduates.

    Expenses $1,528,164 · Grants $25,986

  • City Transformation is aimed to create social change. Awaken educates and empowers individuals with the information and resources needed to combat sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. This is done through various advocacy and outreach efforts. Awaken's commitment to reaching community members is a key component in the fight against sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation that is taking place in our own backyard. Awaken cannot combat this heinous crime alone and we continue to ensure that our community is educated on the human rights violations that are taking place in our own backyard. Between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, Awaken provided 41 engagements and educated over 2,023 community members on sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.

    Expenses $51,779

  • In 2019, Awaken launched the Awaken Restorative Home to provide a safe, rent-free residential program for adult female survivors of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Since its inception, the program has served fifteen women, offering trauma-informed support and stability in a healing-focused environment. In the current tax year, Awaken strategically repurposed the Restorative Home to meet an emerging need by prioritizing services for pregnant and parenting mothers affected by trafficking. This shift reflects Awaken's continued commitment to breaking the generational cycle of exploitation by providing family-centered, holistic care.

    Expenses $41,394

  • Awaken offers preventative education efforts targeting the most vulnerable population - disadvantaged youth. Awaken presents at school assemblies, delivers classroom-based curriculum to students, and works with youth groups to talk to local students about the realities of human trafficking and how to prevent it from happening to them or their loved ones. Between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, we had 20 different events and reached 744 students and school personnel from McQueen High School, Spanish Springs High School,Pinecrest Elementary School, Truckee Meadows Community College, the University of Nevada, Reno, West De Pere Middle School in Wisconsin and others. Awaken has also educated school counselors and safe school professionals in the area.In 2022, Awaken, in conjunction with Washoe County Human Services Agency launched Northern Nevada's first survivor developed curriculum from My Life My Choice. This evidence-based program equips vulnerable youth with essential life skills to break cycles of exploitation. This fiscal year, six at-risk youth benefited from this program.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
