Mission and programs · 2025

Primary exempt purpose

A global partnership that nurtures and empowers South African communities, especially in the Karoo region, to provide health, education, and nutrition programs for youth. These programs are designed to encourage youth to become healthy, responsible citizens in their racially diverse communities.

  • 2025 continued the implementation of Hope in South Africa, Inc's (HISA's) core activities. The soup kitchen and bakery continued to supply youth and adults in need with nutritous meals daily from Monday through Friday. The efforts in the soup kitchen were supported not only by Grassroot Hope in South Africa (GHISA), but also by donations of meat and vegetables from local farmers, community members, and the national government. The computer center, located in the Richmond Community Center (RCC), continued in efforts of providing computer skills training and educational opportunities for adults and youth in the community. Local high school and middle school students rely on the computer center to complete their homework and engage in job search activities. Programs long championed by HISA in delivering health education messages relevant to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and HIV/AIDs awareness continue to be presented at the RCC.

    Expenses $75,100

  • In 2025, the more than 500 bikes that arrived at the end of 2024 were unpacked and prepared for use by the residents of Richmond and Colesberg. Half of the bikes were shared with the Rotary partners in Colesberg, NC. HISA has provided critical funding and support for this bike effort in partnership with several Rotary Clubs in South Africa, the USA, and around the World. The goal of establishing a bicycle activity area in Colesberg and at the Richmond Community Center (RCC) was successful. A second shipping container was purchased and delivered to be used for storage and to establish a bike shop for repairs. In 2025, 6 travelers from Frederick, Maryland, including 4 Rotarians, traveled to Richmond and Colesberg to support the bike effort and help implement the program. HISA, in partnership with the Rotary Clubs, trained community members in both towns to be bicycle mechanics. Children and adults received training in the safety, upkeep, and responsibility of bicycle ownership. During a weekend event, the USA travelers conducted bike riding and repair workshops and participated in several bike rides in Colesberg, NC with local Rotarians and residents from Richmond, Colesberg, Empangeni, and Kimberley. The event was a huge success combining Rotarians and residents, all from different backgrounds and ethnicities, in a positive and supportive environment.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
