Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

Habitots mission is to provide art and play-based experiences for young children that are safe, appropriate and enriching that help them learn and grow and to support parents and caregivers in raising curious, creative and confident children.

Activities or mission (Part I)

Habitot offers hands-on exhibits and learning experiences for young children and their families. Along with outreach and inclusion programs for the most vulnerable, Habitot has welcomed over 1.5 million visitors since 1998 and influenced generations of children and parents in raising curious, creative and confident children.

  • Temporary Museum Installation - Habitot opened a temporary space on Bay Street, Emeryville from January to December, presenting the Space Station Experience, an immersive rocket ship and mission control exhibit with embedded STEM play and learning activities through May, and the Little Town exhibit with a Firehouse, Fire Engine, and interactive burning house, a pretend play Grocery Store and Pizzeria from June to December. An expanded Infant-toddler area, Wiggle Wall climber, train table, chalk wall, Art Studio and Maker Lab were available as well. Open four days a week to the public, with after hours programs like Parents Night Out drop-offs, preschool field trips, STEM classes, and birthday party rentals, the museum welcomed over 16,700 adults and children in 2024.

    Expenses $154,883 · Revenue $113,739

  • Mobile Museum Tour - Habitot continued its Mobile Museum Tour with 9 full-day pop-up events in 6 cities in outdoor community parks, libraries, schools, and other venues across the East Bay. The most popular exhibits were presented along with art and maker stations facilitated by art and education staff. Exhibits include the Waterworks water play and discovery exhibit; Imagination Playground Blue Building Blocks; Paintable Wall; Magnetic Ball Wall; Baby Ball Pit and stations for art and maker stations. A sliding scale of $1-40 per family makes the events accessible to a wide range of projects. The Tour supported post-pandemic re-engagement of families and children in social situations, while also strengthening parent-child bonding. Additional free Arts & Crafts Days took place in Emeryville and Berkeley. Almost 2,300 parents and children attended 2024 events.

    Expenses $83,145 · Revenue $10,000

  • Birthday Parties for Unhoused Children - Prior to the pandemic, Habitot welcomed dozens of children and families living in family shelters for their childrens birthday party at the museum, with Habitot providing a gift for the birthday child, food, drinks, a cake, and party to family shelters. This year, Habitot was able to reinstate its all-inclusive birthday parties for children experiencing homelessness in the Emeryville space. These parties included two hours of museum time for the birthday child and their guests, pizza, beverages, a personalized birthday cake, party favors for attending children and a hand-selected $25 gift for the birthday child.

    Expenses $6,924

  • Habitot-at-Home and Kit-based Programs for Families - Habitot continued distribution of its STEM, art, and play-based learning kits created during the pandemic for at-home use. The kits were available for purchase and grants covered the cost of some kits distributed to low income and special needs families. Staff-led, how-to videos available through the YouTube channel were made available to guide parents in facilitating kit activities with their children, especially how to foster childrens learning of math and science concepts, language, and problem solving. In addition, Totmail e-newsletters containing instructions for art and STEM at-home activities were delivered to 4,000 households weekly with a high open rate of 30-40%.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Grants received

California fundraising campaigns

Campaigns run by paid fundraisers, commercial coventurers and thrift stores naming this organization, as California published them. Both figures are as filed, and what the first one counts depends on the campaign type — a coventurer or a thrift store files its own sales rather than money collected for the charity. The 990 reports this only as a yearly total, never per campaign.

Amounts are as filed and do not add up: a commercial coventurer reports one promotion's whole gross once for each charity that shared in it. A campaign may also name more than one registered charity, in which case it appears on each.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
